Orlando Vigil remarks by Rev. Gwen Fry, Pridecorps board member -
Last evening I was given the opportunity to give the opening reflection and prayer at the Orlando Vigil in Little Rock. I was encouraged to share this with you and I hope you may find some comfort in the words I spoke.

I have carried the words of Lamentations 2:11 with me, spiritually, emotionally, and physically, since I first heard the news as I awoke this morning:

“My eyes are spent with weeping;
my stomach churns;
my bile is poured out on the ground
because of the destruction of my people, because infants and babes faint and die in the streets of the city.”

I hear family and friends each year during the month of June greet me with “Happy Pride,” as if it were a Holy Day in the church year. Happy Pride? Not this day because infants and babes faint and die in the streets of the city.

My resolve is steeled, however, because I know that in the end Love is greater than fear and hate. I have powerfully seen it at work right here in our own LGBT community and in our faith communities. Today let us mourn; and tomorrow let us rise in unity, powerfully witnessing to the work leading to an end of this violence and continue our march toward the day when we will live in a country where there truly is justice for all.

But now:

Let us pray for those who have died.

Let us pray for those who were wounded that they may have healing.

Let us pray for the families and those who grieve.

Let us pray for our communities, our nation, and our world.

Let us pray for the entire human family, all of whom have been wonderfully created in the image of God.

And, finally, let us pray the words attributed to St. Francis.

God, make us instruments of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let us sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is error, truth;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

Grant that we may not so much seek
To be consoled, as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen.
